Harlan Stelmach

Dr. Harlan Stelmach is a social theorist with a focus on the interrelationship of individual and social ethics in the context of pluralistic religious commitments.

 

He began his work in the fields of social theory and ethics at Harvard University where he received his master’s degree. He completed his doctoral work at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California in 1977 in an interdisciplinary program in ethics and social science. A post-doctoral visiting scholar stay at the Haas School of Business in Berkeley contributed to one of his specialties in economic ethics. He was the director of the Center for Ethics and Social Policy in Berkeley for five years.

 

Dr. Stelmach joined the faculty of Dominican University of California in 1997 where he taught courses in moral philosophy, religious studies and science and religion. He retired in 2018 as Emeritus Professor of Humanities.

 

He is past president of the Board of the Marin Interfaith Council, and co-founder of The Center for the Common Good. He is now working with a group of scholars to establish an annual lectureship to honor the late great sociologist of religion, Robert N. Bellah at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley on “Religion and Public Life.”​
